Taking It To The Next Level!

Nineteen writers came in from the cold, learned, and left inspired to take their writing to the next level. The 6th annual Fall workshop(13th conference )Oct.17 was abundant with lessons and tips. Sylvia Taylor taught the fine points of writing a query letter that catches the attention of an editor or agent. Even for those of us who are already writing for magazines we were made more aware of how polished that one page of writing should be.
“Write fat words not more words” was Sylvia’s advice. Not only important to creating a 300-500 word article but important to our writing in general. I woke up the next day with fat words running through my mind, and immediately went to work rewriting an opening paragraph.
The day finished with a rousing version of So You Think You Can Write with Powell River’s version of American Idol judges, Simon, Paula and Randy alias Darren Robinson, Bobby Fields, and Gary Grieco. Each contestant read their entry, were commented on in Idol fashion as well as withvaluable insights. Our judges played their roles with great humour and graciousness.
First place winner Angie Davey, with her description of the area had tourism reps saying it was exactly what they were looking for. Second place winner, Amber Lynch transported us into the beauty of First Nations people and the Powell River area with her poem. Third place winner, Donna Kolezar described the Pearl on the Sunshine Coast.

Watch as plans unfold for the 7th Anniversary conference April 9,10/10. It promises to be packed with empowering workshops that will show writers how to earn an income, master classe’s taught by our patrons Sylvia Taylor and Tony Dalton, and another fun writing contest.
